WELCOME TO OUR
JOE SHMO DICTIONARY!

We have created this section to help clarify some of the most common technical "MUMBO JUMBO" terminology used in a site as well as the everyday technical jibberish you hear all the time.

WEB SITE
A site (location) on the World Wide Web. Each Web site contains a home page, which is the first document users see when they enter the site. The site might also contain additional documents and files. Each site is owned and managed by an individual, company or organization.

INTERNET
A global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions.

WWW.
You hear it and type it all the time right before that web address. It stands for "World Wide Web".

HTTP://
You even see this all the time right before you type in those www letters. It stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol". The "//" characters simply ends the statement.

WEB BROWSER
You are using one right now to read this.

HTML
One of many, many file names for the web. This stands for "Hypertext Markup Language". In other words, the coded page that makes a web page look like it does in a web browser.

GUI (Pronounced "gooey")
This stands for "Graphical User Interface. Simply, how your site looks visually.

NAVIGATION
This is sooooo important. We actually base your entire design around this function. This is how a viewer easily (or difficultly) finds the information they need while visiting through your site.

MOUSE ROLLOVERS
When you train a mouse to rollover. Just kidding, relax! A mouse rollover is when you move your mouse over a button or image in a website and the button or image changes. The most common type of mouse rollover is used for a button effect in a navigation. Just move your mouse over our sections at the top left and see for yourself.

HYPERLINK
A function that happens when you click on a button or image and it takes you to another page or site.

FONT
A fancy name for typeface. Verdana, Arial and Times are usually the most standard fonts used in websites.

JPEG or JPG
This fie format is the most standard file formats used for images and graphics. It stands for "Joint Photographer's Expert Group". It is a compressed image data file so the file size can become smaller and much faster in loading.

GIF
You say toe-may-toe, we say toe-ma-toe. There is still a battle as to how to pronounce this file format correctly. "JIFF" or "GIFF", either way its a general interchange format. This is mostly used for graphics containing non-photographic images such as line art drawings. They offer the most file compression and size but only use 256 colors, therefore not good for photographs.

ISP
Another important term. Internet Service Provider. The company who take care of your website files and makes sure it can be seen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the internet.

DOMAIN NAME
Simply, your website address in which you own.

URL
Uniform Resource Locator. Very, very fancy term for "website address".
